Hydrothermal vent chimney-base sediments as unique habitat for meiobenthos and nanobenthos: Observations on millimeter-scale distributions

چکیده

Hydrothermal vents are critical to marine geochemical cycling and ecosystem functioning. Although hydrothermal vent-associated megafauna chemoautotrophic prokaryotes have received extensive dedicated study, smaller eukaryotes such as meiofauna nanobiota much less attention. These communities comprise links in trophic flow carbon of other habitats, so study their occurrence role vent ecosystems is warranted. Further, an understudied habitat the thin sediment cover at base chimneys. An initial revealed that sediments chimneys Izu-Ogawasara Arc system (western North Pacific) support metazoan meiofauna, but very little known about taxonomic composition abundance meiobenthic protists nanobiota, or millimeter-scale distributions. Using Fluorescently Labeled Embedded Coring method (FLEC), we describe results on meiofaunal higher-level identifications, life positions relative abundances within from three habitats (base chimneys, inside caldera away outside caldera) Myojin-Knoll vicinity. Results suggest chimney-base community unique more abundant compared non-chimney associated eukaryotic communities. Supporting evidence (molecular phylogeny, scanning transmission electron microscopy imaging) documents first hydrothermal-vent-associated occurrences for two protist taxa. Collectively, provide valuable insights into a cryptic component ecosystem.

Evidence for the role of endosymbionts in regional-scale habitat partitioning by hydrothermal vent symbioses.

Deep-sea hydrothermal vents are populated by dense communities of animals that form symbiotic associations with chemolithoautotrophic bacteria. To date, our understanding of which factors govern the distribution of host/symbiont associations (or holobionts) in nature is limited, although host physiology often is invoked. In general, the role that symbionts play in habitat utilization by vent ho...

Origin and evolution of the unique tetra-domain hemoglobin from the hydrothermal vent scale worm Branchipolynoe.

Hemoglobin is the most common respiratory pigment in annelids. It can be intra or extracellular, and this latter type can form large multimeric complexes. The hydrothermal vent scale worms Branchipolynoe symmytilida and Branchipolynoe seepensis express an extracellular tetra-domain hemoglobin (Hb) that is unique in annelids. We sequenced the gene for the single-domain and tetra-domain globins i...

A Simple and Efficient RNA Extraction Method from Deep-Sea Hydrothermal Vent Chimney Structures

RNA-based microbiological analyses, e.g., transcriptome and reverse transcription-quantitative PCR, require a relatively large amount of high quality RNA. RNA-based analyses on microbial communities in deep-sea hydrothermal environments often encounter methodological difficulties with RNA extraction due to the presence of unique minerals in and the low biomass of samples. In the present study, ...

Aeropyrum camini sp. nov., a strictly aerobic, hyperthermophilic archaeon from a deep-sea hydrothermal vent chimney.

A novel hyperthermophilic archaeon, designated strain SY1(T), was isolated from a deep-sea hydrothermal vent chimney sample collected from the Suiyo Seamount in the Izu-Bonin Arc, Japan, at a depth of 1385 m. The cells were irregular cocci (1.2 to 2.1 micro m in diameter), occurring singly or in pairs, and stained Gram-negative. Growth was observed between 70 and 97 degrees C (optimum, 85 degre...

Geochemistry of Champagne Hot Springs shallow hydrothermal vent field and associated sediments, Dominica, Lesser Antilles

The Champagne Hot Springs (CHS) shallow submarine hydrothermal system is located along the submerged flank of the Plat Pays volcanic system on the southwest section of the island of Dominica, Lesser Antilles. We have conducted a detailed geochemical study of the hydrothermal system, with the objectives to investigate the source of the hydrothermal fluids and gases, their effect on sediment and ...
